Photographing weddings is super challenging as it involves so many different types of photography—portraits, still life, action shots, travel, and landscape. And if you’re new to this type of photography, photographing your first few weddings can be extremely overwhelming. Here are some tips to help you capture the special day.

Get to Know the Couple

During your initial meeting, take the time to get to know more about the couple. You should ask questions like, How did they meet? and How long have they been together? These questions will help give you inspiration for the story in your images.

Create a Personalized Shot Checklist

Before the wedding, make sure you sit down with the couple and ask them what they want to be photographed. Some standard shots include bride and groom preparations, key items like invitation and wedding rings, family portraits, venue, wedding ceremony, reception, and wedding party.

Know When to Keep Your Distance and When to Move Closer

When you can, try and keep your distance unless you are directing the party for wedding photo poses. Your job is to capture these moments without interrupting them, but for some shots you may need to move closer to get the perfect angle.

Figure Out the Lighting Before the Event

Try and visit the venue a couple of days in advance around the same time as the actual wedding, so you can see what kind of lighting you’ll be working with. Take some sample shots of the venue so you can figure out the best settings to work with.
