After a lot of anticipation, the Costume Institute finally announced the theme of the upcoming Met Gala. Next year’s event will dive into 400 years of fashion history with the new theme “Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion”, and here’s everything we know about it so far.

Theme’s Meaning

“Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion” will feature around 250 items from the Costume Institute’s permanent collection. It will center on forgotten, dormant garments that were rarely seen in public, some of which are too fragile to be worn again. They’ll be displayed in an entirely new way, and modern technology will be used to create an immersive sensorial experience.

Featured Designers

“Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion” will cover four centuries of fashion history, ranging from Elizabethan-era designs from the 17th century to modern-day creations. Elsa Schiaparelli, Yves Saint Laurent, Christian Dior, and Hubert de Givenchy will be some of the iconic designers on display, along with 21st-century titans such as Phillip Lim and Stella McCartney.

Time & Place

As always, the Met Gala will take place at the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute in New York City on the first Monday of May – May 6, 2024. The exhibition “Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion” will be on display between May 10 and September 2, 2024.
