The fashion world recently bid farewell to visionary designer Virgil Abloh, after his tragic passing to a rare type of cancer at the age of 41. The late designer spent the last decade breaking new ground in the fashion world, and here are three moments that defined his short, but illustrious career.
Kanye West’s Creative Director
Abloh met Kanye West while interring for Fendi in Rome and they had an instant connection. Abloh assumed the role of the creative director of West’s creative agency Donda in 2011 and kept collaborating with the famous rapper in the years to come.
Founding Off-White
By the time 2012 rolled around, Abloh already had so many connections in the fashion world that he could easily start his own brand. His luxury streetwear brand Off-White was born, and he went on to collaborate with everyone from Nike and Levi’s to Jimmy Choo and Converse in the upcoming years.
Louis Vuitton’s Artistic Director
After finding incredible success with Off-White, Abloh was put in charge of another luxury brand. He was appointed as the artistic director of Louis Vuitton’s menswear line in 2018 and served in this position until his death. He made history as the first African-American to be appointed as the artistic director at this luxury fashion house.
