Get to Know Juliet Johnstone, The Artist Behind Bella Hadid and Dua Lipa’s Customized Carharrt Pants

You may not know who Juliet Johnstone is yet, but chances are you’ve seen some of her work on Bella Hadid and Dua Lipa. Known for her customized Carharrt pants, the artist is expanding her designs from painted pants to pullover fleeces.

A graduate of Parsons, Johnstone began experimenting with wearable artwork as something “creative and carefree”. The artist has been wearing vintage sport fleeces for a while, but she was never able to find one that she believed represented her—until she created her own.

When speaking with Vogue UK she reminisced about searching eBay for ’80s and ’90s fleeces in bright colors, but never finding one that fit the way she wanted, “The one issue for me was, the fit was never right. The women’s fleece was a tailored cut and was meant to hug the body, which I did not want. The small men’s fleece was a cooler and boxier fit, but it was too long and didn’t fit the shoulders.”

The designer now makes painted fleece sweatshirts with elastic and cord stoppers at the bottom that can be adjusted to fit all genders. These are the first product from the artist that aren’t unique. She vows to only make what is purchased, so she isn’t wasting clothes and the sweaters will only be available for pre-order for a week ending October 30. After that, the design won’t be available again.

Johnstone wants to make the experience similar to buying art because she views herself as an artist, not a fashion designer. “I try to make the experience similar to the one of buying art, because at the end of the day I still call myself an artist over a fashion designer,” she explained.
